Fish on a Phone

December 31st, 2007

There are handy new ways to check the sustainability of certain seafoods, even when you’re on the go. If you’re in a market or restaurant and you’re lucky enough to be talking to someone familiar with his establishment’s seafood, you can check the environmental and health effects of that evening’s dinner.

Recently debuted is a text-messaging service from the folks at Blue Ocean Institute. Simply use a cell phone text to 30644 with the message “FISH” followed by the name of your fish you’re fancying that evening. The service will respond with information about your choice.

If your phone has an Internet browser, you could also direct it to fishphone.org or seafoodwatch.org to view a mobile version of the guide.

Of course, if you’re like me and you haven’t figured out how to use your phone’s text messaging capabilities (even though you may have just built and reprogrammed a website), you might want to stick to the good old-fashioned and free cards.
